The Scientific World Mourns the Passing of Eminent Astrophysicist Professor Massimo Capaccioli (1944–2026) an eminent Italian astrophysicist and former President of the Italian Astronomical Society. 

Professor Capaccioli was a global authority on elliptical galaxies and left an indelible mark on modern astrophysics.

As the long-standing Director of the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory and Professor Emeritus at the University of Naples Federico II, he mentored generations of researchers worldwide.

 Pioneer of scientific diplomacy, he built profound cultural and geopolitical bridges, particularly within the Mediterranean. Through his dedicated partnership with Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), he fostered the academic mobility of Egyptian scholars, shaping the current leadership of astrophysics in Cairo.
